@Billy Putnam Yes, I agree. The problem with regenerative breaking is that it won't work if battery is over 80% of charge. But if it is on electrify road the excess of electricity go back to the grid. When driving on electric roads for safety reasons the speed limit is 60mph and it can go faster but no recommended.

@nelio SAMch it's so Wrong that the people in these situations are interested in the next Dollar to be made and removed from your account and not how much can we save and how far can we go! Do you know if they have even optimized the recharging while driving\Towing? Some race cars use a alternator that drives off of the drive shafts or wheels\moving parts instead of the parasitic losses off of the engine. And say belts\Gearing to the trailer wheels are free spinning and could be a good place for Regen to get more power from when braking or down hilling etc?

@The Fast Lane Truck I have Asked a few other's and it seems to be a unknown thing at this point. Does the range extender work while you are driving down the road or do you need to be parked and the vehicle off? And I was curious about the Weights for Towing and the Accompanied Miles away for Towing? For instance. If you have a lightweight Trailer for a Snowmobile\ATV total weight about the 1.000lbs area does the range stay close to the regular Range? And where is the Break Away points? We're the weights really starts to make a massive amount of damage to the expected available Miles Left? A idea of a Short course loop while you drive the same speed the same way but increasing the weight of the trailer with a exact amount of weight added each loop and see what happens with the expected mileage and then you could add Speeds in the later part of the test loop to see how much the speeds discharges more quickly as long as you do it at the same place\point. Also do you know if you can use a home rated Generator for a Backup for when you come up Short on destination? Say like a 5.500 Watt 110-220Volt Generator and say a slightly higher level one that's capable of doing 7-10k Watts and [email protected]? Thanks (Good luck)

@jack daniels the problem is that the trailer weight and speed is killing the available distance from the battery pack. With the small camper that they said was approximately#2500lbs the amount of milage was cut from a reasonable 300 miles between charging to a dismal 100-115 miles before completely discharged and the fast charger was just out of reach. But do you know if you can use the Range extenders while you drive or do you have to be parked?

@Trigger Troll you are the only one that has actually hit the bullseye that most of the time ev people Miss becouse of the Starry New Shiney car's! It's not until you Ask a car to Go to WORK that these EV Vehicles are really Showing there Short comings and goings. The other things that it would have been nice for the testing done would have been a exact loop\Weight\Speed\Time tests!? Like the unloaded [email protected] with the same driver doing the same thing. Then Car\Empty trailer and then proceed with a set amount of weight added to the trailer until the maximum amount of recommend towing capacity is reached. And it looked like the computer was working well enough to get a basic idea of miles to completely drained. But the way they just did a Approximately the trailers weighed in at the information isn't that specific to actually get a Real informed amount of distance and weight for a usage point of view? Like is there a certain amount of weight of trailer and cargo we're there's not a lot of difference in drag\weight and the milage is still available. Like a small lightweight Aluminum trailer and a regular sized four wheeler or a two wide snowmobile trailer is still light enough for reasonable mileage? There's quite a few variables that they didn't think about before they attempted the Long haul run to go camping. Also does anyone know if you use the gas powered range extender in the trailer\Camper work driving down the road or does it have to be parked and off for the charging system to work? And if you have a bigger diesel Generator that has a 240Volt\400Amp out put where's the line between draining the batteries and charging?

Bunk. I am conservative but even I see the serious advantages that electric has over petrol based trucks. Any vehicle will decrease in efficiency when the load is increased (F$%^ing duh). especially up hill but, what vehicle can recoup that energy when desending a hill while also reducing wear on the braking system? Fewer moving parts equals lower operating costs, less down time and better reliability. No more clogged injectors, emissions testing, fuel and Def refills, oil changes, transmission failure. My dodge had a great motor but the tranny sucked, my gmc had a great tranny but the injectors sucked, my ford... well, my ford just sucked. Two years from now let"s talk but right now I'd like to know how this jack ass has a youtube channel with this many hits.

EV manufactures for vehicles made to tow could explore and design these vehicles with wind powered battery charging turbines/fans in the grill area on a moving vehicle to boost range. This air perhaps could also be directed for cooling motors?
Just seems like a natural element that could be used to boost these beasts?

With my car I get 260 miles on a full tank with about 200lbs inside and a 200lb rooftop tent that is a box, not at all aero. I daily drive that way. The problem with electric I think is the distance of your trip and where you can charge. If I was going on an overland roadtrip with an electric vehicle, I'd be backing a serious solar setup so I didnt have to pay stupid money for a tow.

I'd rather have gas in overland and have some cans

                • tossed but not sunk ss

I dont even consider that offroading , they had to go down a dirt road. I've seen some of the biggest piece of shit cars go through worse with no problems. Personally I don't like battery operated cars, yeah they are fast off the line and can get up there in speed , I could of told you that almost 10 years ago when you race a electric rc car vs a gas powered one but its about 10-20 minutes of fun and the day is over unless you have a ton of extra batteries and you can just keep refilling the gas tank on the other one.

It will take a few more years of cost reductions and energy density increases before electric towing becomes practical. The good news is that it's happening. Battery prices have gone down 87% since 2010. Energy density has also increased, but not by as much. Bottom line is that it will happen. It's only a question of when.

Best truck is the 2019 Ram Rebel Ecodiesel. Electric vehicles are simply not made to last outdoors. The more you tow the more battery consumption which equals way less driving range. The technology is not considered efficient for off roading yet.Maybe in a few more years.

Get ready for the next disruption. Tesla is well aware of the lack of battery energy density for towing. Tesla will bring its battery, motor and software technology to the trailer market in the form of a "skateboard" platform. The trailers manufacturers will benefit from safety and performance features found on Tesla vehicles; traction control, regenerative braking, slip start, air suspension, etc. The trailer will communicate with the vehicle through manufactures apps drawing on decades of towing knowledge. We're about to enter into a new era of smart trailers.

The answer is no as there are too many variables from weight to gradient. Regardless of fuel type it's expected that higher loads equal higher consumption. Who hauls a horse trailer with a sedan anyway how about comparing truck (liquid fuel) to truck (electric) both designed to carry heavier loads.

A huge percentage of truck owners own a truck as a status symbol. ie the King Ranch edition Ford, what use is that to a working person who is going to rough up the vehicle on their job? A small percentage of people spend all their time out in the wild with no recharge available and as for long haul, this is going to change with better batteries and more charging stations. And when gas prices shoot back up (as they will) everyone who ran out to buy a big V8 is gonna see a hole in their pocket. The Saudis and other OPEC countries are meeting to cut production to raise prices as I write this.

This car did just fine on that super rough, rocky and uneven road, that even most pickup trucks would have issues with. The Test should have been with off road tires, not Continental Super smooth rolling road tires meant for hard smooth pavement. I am in agreement with Towing capability and , there is no way anyone would drive one hour and then charge for one hour.
